Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Saturday 10 March

Depart NZ on Emirates’ non-stop service from Auckland to Dubai (the Christchurch flight has a transit) and then straight through to London Heathrow.

Day 2

Sunday 11 March

Arrive London late morning where we’re met at Heathrow and transferred (about an hour’s drive) to our magnificent 5 star Hotel in the centre of Oxford

IN Sunday 11 March OUT Saturday 17 March – 6 nights accommodation in Oxford at the Mcdonald Randolph Hotel with full breakfast daily

Day 3
Monday 12 March

A free day to discover the delights of Oxford but we have a Cocktail Function at 5pm where we’ll have drinks and nibbles and listen to local experts discussing the next 4 days of stellar National Hunt racing at Cheltenham. (B,CF)

Days 4 through 7

Tuesday 13 March – Friday 16 March inclusive is the world famous Cheltenham festival where we have 4 consecutive days of the best jumps’ racing in the world.
11 Grade (Group) One races during the 4 days and over 200,000 racegoers. It starts with the Champion Hurdle on the Tuesday, then the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Wednesday, the Ladbrokes World Hurdle on Thursday and the Cheltenham Gold Cup on the Friday (these are obviously just the feature races on these days). The package will include Club Enclosure tickets daily which gives entrance to the racecourse and access to the most exclusive area on the racecourse opposite the winning post.
On all 4 days of the Cheltenham Festival our coach will depart from our Oxford hotel at around 10.30am and, as experience taught us this year in 2017, we should arrive around 12 noon on course at Cheltenham. We’ll stay all day and leave after the last. Our Coach has a hot drinks dispenser, a fridge and Wi-Fi!! (B)
Staying in Oxford on Friday night (St Patrick’s Day) will ensure the opportunity of visiting any of the local Irish Pubs.

Day 8
Saturday 17 March

We’re going to depart Oxford promptly at 9am for London because it’s a sporting extravaganza today in London. England take on Ireland at Twickenham, Tottenham Hotspur host Newcastle at Wembley and West Ham host Manchester United at the Olympic stadium and Epic Journeys is happy to assist in obtaining tickets to any of the aforementioned. Of course the art lovers among the group will no doubt head for the National Gallery or the Tate while those who love a drink might find their way to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese or the Punch and Judy in Covent Garden. ….and race-going tragics might head out to Kempton Park (just past Twickenham) where an afternoon of Jumps racing awaits. Whatever you choose to do, we will however go straight to our beautiful centrally located hotel to drop bags (check-in early if we’re lucky) and then head in our differing directions. (B)

IN Saturday 17 March OUT Tuesday 20 March – 3 nights accommodation in London at Amba Hotel Charing Cross (in Deluxe rooms) with full breakfast daily. The Amba Hotel Charing Cross is indeed at the notional centre of London (Charing Cross) and was opened in 1865. The work of renowned English architect Edward Barry (famed for his earlier reconstruction of Covent Garden) this is a magnificent building and noted for its ornate frontage in the French Renaissance style.

Day 9

Sunday 18 March

A completely free day other than this evening when we have a group bonding session over dinner at a nearby West End restaurant (dinner and a couple of drinks are included). (B,D)

Day 10

Monday 19 March

Another day at your leisure to tick off your personal London bucket-list. Churchill’s bunker, the Imperial War Museum, Hyde Park, the Tower, the London Eye or just down to the bookies to watch Jump Racing from Southwell and Taunton. Tonight though we are off into the West End where you’ll have a choice of 2 hit musicals. (B)

Day 11

Tuesday 20 March

An early start because we’re off to Newmarket where our day tour will include watching the 2nd gallops at Warren Hill, a visit to Chevely Park Stud, a quick lunch and a visit to a racing yard. Then into Cambridge where we’ll be staying in this wonderful University city (B,L).

IN Tuesday 20 March OUT Thursday 22 March – 2 nights accommodation in Cambridge at the Doubletree Hilton with full breakfast daily

Day 12

Wednesday 21 March

A complete day at leisure to wander around Cambridge. (B)

Day 13

Thursday 22 March

The coach departs sharp at 8.30am where we’ll take 2 hours to get to Brighton and then we’ll have 3 hours wandering around this fascinating seaside town (plenty of time for a snack or a drink) before we head off to London Gatwick Airport where we catch our flight to Barcelona (departs 4.30pm). We arrive in Barcelona at 7.30pm and are met and taken to our centrally located Barcelona Hotel. (B)

IN Thursday 22 March OUT Friday 23 March – 1 nights accommodation in Barcelona at Picasso Hotel with full breakfast

Day 14

Friday 23 March

You’ll have the day free before a 2.30pm departure from the Hotel to the Cruise terminal where our Cruise ship departs at 6pm (B,D)

Days 14 through 21

Friday 23 March – Friday 30 March – Cruising on the MSC Meraviglia – 8day/7 night Mediterranean Cruise
The MSC Meraviglia is the magnificent new ship in the MSC fleet and has just made (in June 2017) its maiden voyage.
Departing Barcelona at 6pm our ports of call during our Cruise include Marseilles, Genoa, Civitavecchia (Rome), Palermo (Sicily) and Valetta (Malta) before returning to Barcelona on Friday 30 March
Saturday 24 March – we arrive in Marseilles at 8am and depart again at 5pm and Epic Journeys will supply a complimentary shuttle from the Cruise Terminal to the centre of Marseilles.
Sunday 25 March – we arrive in Genoa at 8am and after disembarking Epic Journeys has its own shore excursion. We’ll be met by one of Italy’s leading inbound operators who will take us the relatively short distance to the Cinque Terre where we’ll have the day exploring the Italian Riviera. The five fishing villages are centuries-old and the Cinque Terre is currently one of the most visited places on the planet (we’re lucky we’re here in March and not peak season). Back to Genoa for a 6pm departure.

Monday 26 March – we arrive in Civitavecchia (Rome’s port) again at 8am and once more we have our own shore excursion where we’ll head into Rome for the day and view the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica (and perhaps a bar or 3). The reality is there’s too much to see in one day and I anticipate the group will have different priorities which we’ll accommodate one way or another. Then back to the MSC Meraviglia for another 6pm departure.

Tuesday 27 March – we arrive in Palermo at 10am and depart again at 5pm so today we’ll be supplying a complimentary shuttle (return) from the Cruise Ship terminal to the town of Palermo.
Wednesday 28 March – we arrive into Valetta at 10am and depart again at 5pm and again we’ll be supplying a complimentary shuttle (return) from the Cruise terminal into Valetta.
Thursday 29 March – a day at sea cruising the glorious Mediterranean and the annual Euchre tournament will take place – will Peter Bingham and Wayne Beggs (Bing & Biggles) be back to defend their title?

Day 21

Friday 30 March – we arrive at Barcelona at 9am where we’re met and given a whirlwind tour of the city (re-tracing our steps from a week ago) before heading out to Barcelona International Airport . We then catch our early afternoon flight to Dubai, arriving midnight Friday where we’re met and transferred to our magnificent Dubai Hotel for immediate check-in.

We arrive in Dubai just after midnight on Friday where again we’re met and transferred into our Dubai Hotel where our beds await.

In Friday 30 March Out Monday 2 April – 3 nights accommodation at Movenpick Hotel & Apartments Bur Dubai with full buffet breakfast daily.

Day 22

Saturday 31 March – Dubai World Cup day – with 6 x group 1’s and 3 Group 3’s this is the world’s richest race day at US$30 million in prize money. The Dubai World Cup at US$10 million is the world’s richest horse race.

We’ll have return transfers to Meydan racecourse in Dubai and include a full hospitality package which includes all food and beverages and reserved Grandstand seating right on the winning post (B,L,D)

Day 23

Sunday 1 Aprila day at leisure in Dubai with a farewell dinner included tonight at our tour Hotel (B,D)

Day 24

Monday 2 April – Coach transfer at 8am to catch our 10.25am departure from Dubai Airport. The Auckland flight arrives back in New Zealand at 10am (Christchurch a few hours later) on Tuesday 3 April

Day 25

Arrive back in New Zealand
