Tour Itinerary

SATURDAY 30 NOVEMBER & SUNDAY 1 DECEMBER 2019

Auckland/Dubai/Venice

Departing Auckland on Saturday evening circa 9pm with Emirates and after a brief transit in Dubai we arrive Sunday lunchtime at 1.20pm into Venice.

We’re met at Venice Airport and transferred by our own water taxi, along a succession of waterways including the Grand Canal, on to the wonderful island of San Marco in the middle of Venice where we’ll stay for 3 nights. With a 2.30pm arrival at our absolutely superb hotel there’s ample time to put the bags in the room, a quick freshen up and out to view the Doges Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square). We’ll meet in the bar of the hotel at 5.30pm for a typical Venetian aperitif and nibbles before deciding whether to retire gracefully or find sustenance nearby.

SUNDAY 1 DECEMBER – WEDNESDAY 4 DECEMBER

San Marco, Venice

Hotel A La Commedia
San Marco 4596/A
Venezia, 30124
Ph: +39 041 2770235

  • In Sunday 1 December OUT Wednesday 4 December 3 nights in Venice
  • Non-smoking room with free WiFi
  • Full breakfast included

MONDAY 2 DECEMBER

Venice

After a leisurely breakfast we’ll leave the hotel at 9.30am on foot for a guided tour that’ll include the Rialto bridge, the stunning Rialto mercato (open-air markets) before heading by boat the very short distance over to Cannaregio and the fantastic Christmas market at Strada Nova. This is all over a relatively small area and we’ll be “finished” by 12 noon so time for a light lunch and perhaps a lie-down before we have a gondola ride on the Grand Canal. We’ll be just 6 to a gondola so we’ll have the 5 gondolas just for ourselves and our flotilla will be accompanied by an Italian tenor with accompaniment and an afternoon guaranteed not to be forgotten. (B)

TUESDAY 3 DECEMBER

Venice

The morning is free to explore although I’ll be heading back across the Grand Canal to Campo San Polo with its own glorious Christmas markets, food stalls and ice-skating rink and anyone who fancies can come along for the experience. This afternoon though at 1pm we have a Murano Glass and Burano lace tour organised. (B)

WEDNESDAY 4 DECEMBER

Venice – Ljubljana

We say farewell to Venice at 10am but need another boat ride to meet up with our Coach which will take us on the 3 hour journey to Ljubljana. There is absolutely no doubt Ljubljana itself might be the highlight of the tour with its stunning setting and astonishing Christmas markets and our superb hotel is in the middle of everything. (B)

WEDNESDAY 4 DECEMBER – FRIDAY 6 DECEMBER

Ljubljana

Ph: +386 1 430 7900

  • In Wednesday 4 December Out Friday 6 December 2 nights in Ljubljana
  • Non-smoking room, WiFi and full breakfast included

THURSDAY 5 DECEMBER

Ljubljana

We have a 9am guided tour arranged which includes a Castle (with funicular railway), a Cathedral, an Ice-skating rink, a multitude of bridges, a river cruise, an outdoor market, a stunning Christmas tree and gorgeous Christmas markets before a few hours are set to one side for your own exploration (or perhaps a short rest). This evening we eat as a group in a lovely family run restaurant situated on the banks of the stunning Ljubljanica river. Interestingly, the river bed is one of the most significant archaeological sites on the planet with recent finds from the Stone Ages through the Renaissance period. (B,D)

FRIDAY 6 DECEMBER

Ljubljana – Zagreb

We leave at 10.30am by Coach for Zagreb and after a brief orientation drive around Zagreb (on arrival) the journey has taken just over 3 hours so bring a sandwich or be ready for a latish lunch. The afternoon is free to explore and our hotel is right in the centre of this beautiful city. This evening dress warmly as we’ll have our first look at Zagreb’s quite spectacular Christmas markets and massive outdoor ice-skating rink. (B)

FRIDAY 6 DECEMBER – MONDAY 9 DECEMBER

Zagreb

CROATIA
Ph: +385 1 4863 555

  • In Friday 6 December OUT Monday 9 December 3 nights in Zagreb
  • Non-smoking room
  • Full breakfast included

SATURDAY 7 DECEMBER

Zagreb

The weekend is a fantastic time to be in Zagreb as there are open-air concerts in Ban Jelacic Square (basically outside our hotel), and wondrous Christmas markets across most of the city. There is also a huge open-air Flea market (just 4 tram stops away and I’ll be going) and a wide array of European antiques including WW2 memorabilia is on offer. The local fruit and vegetable and flower markets are adjacent to our hotel and the old town (well worth a wander) starts only 400 metres from our hotel. It’ll be cold here so short forays and back to thaw out in the bar makes the most sense. (B)

SUNDAY 8 DECEMBER

Zagreb

Another day to drink in the sights and sounds of the capital of Croatia or relax and catch up on some rest. This evening dinner is included in a local restaurant. (B,D)

MONDAY 9 DECEMBER

Zagreb- Graz

A 10.30am Coach departure for the 3 hour journey through the mountains driving past snow-filled fields and through a multitude of tunnels before arriving in this lovely city. Graz is Austria’s 2nd largest city, it has 6 universities with over 60,000 students and its historic Mediaeval centre is one of the best-preserved in Central Europe. As per normal we’ll get our Coach driver to give us a brief orientation of the city before depositing us at the Hotel das Weitzer which overlooks the river Mur. The plan (it’s a simple one) is to check-in, drop our bags (a brief freshen-up is permitted) before heading across the bridge to the Christmas markets and then up the funicular to Schlossberg. (B)

MONDAY 9 DECEMBER – WEDNESDAY 11 DECEMBER

Graz

Hotel Das Weitzer
Grieskai 12-14,
Graz 8020
AUSTRIA
Ph: +43 316 7030

  • In Monday 9 December OUT Wednesday 11 December 2 nights in Graz
  • Non-smoking room
  • Full breakfast included

TUESDAY 10 DECEMBER

Graz

This is a free day to continue explore this beautiful city on your own or with your travelling companions although we have arranged lunch at a beautiful local Inn. We will be trying to arrange a visit to the Opera House but will know more nearer to our departure. The old town is eminently walkable from our hotel and again short forays out into the cold makes sense. (B,L)

WEDNESDAY 11 DECEMBER

Graz – Vienna

We’ll continue with what works for us and that is to have a relaxed breakfast and do our travelling between cities in the middle of the day. In effect that allows us to check-out of one hotel and straight into another and the only possible downside is we’re often travelling over lunchtime although we’ll nearly always arrive by 1.30pm. Nevertheless, a sandwich and bottle of water on the Coach isn’t the worst idea anyway. Today we’re departing Graz at 9.30am and driving straight to the astonishing Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna where we should arrive circa 12.30pm and there is a café here anyway. We’ll have just over 2 hours here visiting this quite astonishing Palace and Gardens. Set over 186 hectares and originally established in 1569 by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II this 1,441 roomed Baroque Palace holds an astonishing place in history. Empress Maria Theresa remodelled the Palace between 1740 – 1750 after the death of her husband Ferdinand II and when Napoleon occupied Vienna between 1805-1810 he chose to live here, and you’ll see the bedroom Napoleon slept in before marrying Emperor Franz II’s daughter Marie Louise in 1810 (part of Napoleon’s plan to settle the peace between the 2 rulers). In the 19th century the Palace was the home of Franz Joseph who was the longest-reigning Emperor of Austria – Franz Joseph was born here, lived most of his life here and died at the Palace in November 1916 in the middle of WWI. History hadn’t finished with this most magnificent building because in 1961 it was used as the venue for John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev’s historic meeting. After wandering around this extraordinary UNESCO listed building our Coach (our bags still safely on board) will give us our, by now normal, quick orientation tour of the main sights before dropping us in the city centre and our Viennese hotel where the rest of the day is free to explore. (B)

  • In Wednesday 11 December OUT Friday 13 December 2 nights in Vienna
  • Non-smoking room
  • Full breakfast included

THURSDAY 12 DECEMBER

Vienna

A completely free day to explore Vienna but I’ll be heading to the Leopold Museum, the Naschmarket (dates back to the 16th century) with its 100 food and vintage stalls and restaurants and of course I will welcome company. At 7.30pm we’ll be venturing out as a group to the Vienna Christmas market at Rathausplatz in front of City Hall and marvel at the giant illuminated Christmas tree and watch the locals and visitors alike ice-skating on their beautiful rink. (B)

FRIDAY 13 DECEMBER

Vienna – Bratislava

It’s only a 1 hour drive from Vienna to Bratislava so you’ll have until 11am to catch up on anything you’ve missed in Vienna before we board our Coach and head into Slovakia to the beautiful city of Bratislava. After our brief coach tour of the main sights we’ll be dropped at our beautiful hotel and an opportunity to wander around and get our bearings. Tonight we eat, as a group, at a lovely local restaurant. (B,D)

After the excesses of the morning and lunch the rest of the day is free to explore and relax. (B,L)

SUNDAY 15 DECEMBER

TUESDAY 17 DECEMBER

Budapest

You all have a day to recover from yesterday’s full day tour or continue your explorations on your own or with your travelling companions. (B)

WEDNESDAY 18 DECEMBER

Budapest

Depart Budapest: 1.25pm Arrive Basel: 3.10pm
Our Coach will take around 2 hours to get from Basel Airport to Interlaken so check-in to the Royal St Georges circa 6pm. Nothing is organised this evening so a drink in the bar, a wander around or just find somewhere to sit down for dinner. (B)

THURSDAY 19 DECEMBER

Day trip from Interlaken

We have a full day tour organized and we’ll start by visiting Bern, the beautiful capital of Switzerland, which enchants visitors with its high-quality lifestyle and unique atmosphere. We’ll see the ornate clock tower, the gothic cathedral which rises above the old town, the rose garden where you can enjoy panoramic views, and the numerous fountains scattered around the city. We’ll include lunch before we take the train to Thun for a cruise on Lake Thun. This is a wonderful way to enjoy the winter scenery as we make our way back to Interlaken along the lake. (B,L)

FRIDAY 20 DECEMBER

Day trip from Interlaken

The “hits” just keep on coming as another full day’s touring awaits and today has one of the very few early starts as we leave the hotel early at 8.00am and venture into the Swiss Alps where we enjoy a world of winter mountain scenery as we travel from Chur to Brig aboard the legendary Glacier Express. This amazing railway journey takes us through the alpine heart of Switzerland, passing through tunnels and across bridges. You will want to keep your camera at the ready throughout our journey to capture this stunning winter landscape of frosty mountain forests and glittering alpine meadows blanketed in freshly fallen snow. We’ll enjoy lunch on board the Glacier Express (included) before disembarking the train around 2.30pm where our Coach awaits to drive us back to Interlaken and one last night in this superb lakefront location. (B,L)

SATURDAY 21 DECEMBER

Our full day of sightseeing will include Mevagissey, Newlyn, Mousehole (where we’ll have lunch included), the Minack Theatre (a quite extraordinary place) and we’ll poke our noses into Land’s End, which is pretty ghastly but at least you can say you’ve been there, before heading on to Padstow which of course has been made famous by the exploits of its most famous resident in Rick Stein. Clearly, we’ll find one of the local pubs tonight and celebrate together bringing in the “New Year”. (B)

Despite having had a big night we still need to depart around 9am and our destination is the most beautiful village of Bradford-on-Avon (a 3 hour drive) where we stop for a wander around. We’ll stay here for just 90 minutes before heading off to the American Museum on the outskirts of Bath (only 20 minutes away). This is the only museum of Americana outside the USA and is most fascinating. After an hour for a wander around we’ll head into Bath with a quick swing past The Royal Crescent which, in a city packed with world-class architecture, still stands out. Then we’ll check-in to our city centre hotel where what’s left of the day is yours to explore this most historic of cities.
